Forty-six years ago, on Aug. 21,
1969 Michael Dennis Rohan, attacked Al Aqsa with gasoline, setting a large
portion of it ablaze and destroying the 800-year-old minbar of Salahudin.
Remembering this heinous
attack is more important today than ever before because of the increasing
threats against our beloved al Aqsa. Threats are everywhere - from the rise of
the Temple Movements and incursions by extremist
Jewish settlers backed by Israeli police and military to pending legislation
that would prohibit Muslims from the site or even portions of the mosque.
Since the occupation, Israel has been intent on erasing the Muslim and Christian heritage from Jerusalem. In fact, a few days after the end of the 1967 Six-Day War, Israeli Gen. Sholem Goren called to explode the Dome of the Rock. Now the Temple Movement is working hard to attack Palestinians and impinge their right to worship. They want Al Aqsa to be destroyed. Already, the Temple Institute has prepared everything needed to perform religious ceremonies in their Third Temple, from vessels to priest's garments to a $3 million gold memorah, which is on display in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.
We cannot sit idly by. Educate yourselves on this issue. Join AMP's calls on the US Secretary of State to protect religious freedom in Jerusalem. We must not let the legacy of Dennis William Rohan come to fruition. Al Aqsa's safety is in the hands of Allah swt. But it is our duty to make the effort to protect this holy site. AMP urges you to become active in the issue of Palestine and Jerusalem and then to speak up to anybody and everybody. We must work educate the American public InshaAllah, one day soon, we will all be able to pray together at the free Al Aqsa.
